Couches, Beds, and Tables OH MY!

“I like the couch.” Mark Ruffalo delivers this iconic line in one of my favorite, never-heard-of Rom Coms, “Just like Heaven.” The grieving protagonist is searching for a fully furnished apartment in San-Francisco. Paying attention to little else, he uses the couch as the deciding factor for each apartment he tours.

I feel a little bit like this character right now searching through apartments, but not really sure what I’m looking for. It is typical for missionaries leaving and coming to Rift Valley Academy to sell or purchase entire households. There are four families right now selling their households… couches, beds, tables, stoves, refrigerators, utensils, waffle irons, patio furniture and all for one lump sum price!

This is a new type of decision as I’ve never filled my own space before. While it is exciting sifting through these different options of future home furnishings, it’s overwhelming to purchase an entire home worth of items from someone else sight unseen. There are things about some I really like! Others that have gaps as pieces of furniture may already have been sold… others yet, simply a spreadsheet with no pictures.

Then comes the question: do I want a roommate? This has been handed to me as an option to request… not a requirement and adds complication to the entire equation.

As I was praying through these questions today the Lord reminded me,

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your steps.

Proverbs 3:5-6

Will you please join me in prayer as I face some seemingly significant decisions? Please pray the Lord will direct my steps, helping me to think through what household items will best suit me and the space I will be living in as I move to RVA. Please pray that the Lord would easy my uneasiness providing me wisdom and confidence so my decision would be based on more than simply Mark Ruffalo’s, “I like the couch.”

  1. Praying, sister! I do like that giraffe painting in that one picture… 😉 But for real, praying for God’s care to flood your heart so that your could-be anxiety is only assurance in God’s guidance. ❤

  2. I can’t imagine the decisions you have to make. Praying for you, sweet girl. Maybe you could pray over each picture or each package and ask God to give you peace about the one that’s right for you. I will also be praying about the roommate.
